Ms. Marites Taccad leads the SPES orientation.

The Provincial Government of Cagayan, through the provincial Public Employment Service Office (PESO) hired the recipients of this year’s Student Program for the Employment of Students (SPES). The SPES program is part of PGC’s goals to extend assistance to the marginalized youth.

Some 312 students comprising of previous beneficiaries (SPES babies), Sangguniang Kabataan Kagawad recipients and new applicants who passed the qualifications of the program joined the SPES orientation last May 2, 2012 at the ENR Nursery near Land Bank, Tuguegarao City. The orientation was conducted to familiarize the recipients with their work environment and to give them a background of what their experience will be in PGC.

The SPES program is a continuing effort of Governor Antonio in line with his “Karunungan” agenda. The program seeks to help students who are financially hard up in pursuing their schooling. Under the program, college students are employed for 20-30 days during summer vacation. They are hired as student-employees who will serve at PGC. For the previous years, the SPES employees were assigned at the PNREO Office, where they assist in its environmental programs.

According to Marites Taccad, Provincial PESO Coordinator, they hired SK Kagawad members this year because they want to tap the leadership potentials of students. This is in line with Governor Antonio’s vision to develop the Cagayano youth through various activities of the local government.

The SPES program is in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Sixty percent of the salaries of SPES recipients will come from PGC and 40% will be provided by DOLE. Taccad said that the income that the students will generate from the SPES program will help them in their school needs come this first academic semester of the year.

Governor Antonio funded this year’s SPES program with a total amount of P750,000.  Governor Antonio said that the SPES program will give the students an experience on how public service works. He added that this will help them become responsible and hardworking individuals. MMTBaquiran
