The Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office (PNREO) spearheaded the river clean-up at barangays Caggay and Tanza, Tuguegarao City on April 18, 2012 and coastal clean-up in Aparri Cagayan on April 20, 2012.
Residents and barangay officials along the said barangays participated in the river clean-up. Different agencies and residents participated in the coastal clean-up in Aparri Among the participants were Bureau of Customs, PAG-ASA, DENR-CENRO, DEPED, PNP, DPWH, BFP, Coast Guard, TESDA, and the LGU. The volunteers removed trash and other garbage materials from the river banks and coastal areas.
Forester Robert E. Adap, PNREO Officer said that marine debris can be harmful and a serious threat to marine wildlife and can even become hazardous to human health. “With the collective effort of the province through Governor Alvaro T. Antonio, service groups and other partner agencies, we can alleviate the effects of marine trash and contribute to the mitigation of climate change,” Adap added.
The river and coastal clean-up was initiated by the Provincial Government through the PNREO in participation of the 2012 Earth Day celebration by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 553. The activity aimed to have cleaner oceans and waterways year-round and to promote public awareness on marine debris issues.
This year’s theme for Earth Day Celebration is “Earth Day, Everyday, Everywhere.” VBRamos
