LGU Lal-lo assures commuters of their safety

30 May

Lallo Mayor Florante Pascual recently spearheaded a meeting on the Traffic Management System for the temporary closure of the Magapit Suspension Bridge in his town. “While we still have an indefinite schedule on the closure of Magapit, this meeting aims to ensure that the commuting public has nothing to worry about,” said Mayor Pascual.

The Magapit suspension bridge, said to be first in Asia when it was constructed in the 80’s, has to undergo a major repair of its approaches.  The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) funded the said rehabilitation project for P100M.  It is expected that the rehabilitation will be finished even before its target completion of six months.

The meeting was attended by Barangay Officials,  Lal-lo PNP including their Chief of Police, PCI Juson V. Sumibcay, members of the Police Mobile Group, Traffic Management Group, Rescue 29 Group and the project engineer of DPWH.

Topics discussed during the meeting were the possible routes for commuters coming from Districts 1 and 2 going to Tuguegarao and vice versa; traffic scheme to be undertaken before and during the actual operations in ferrying passengers and their respective vehicles, (private or public conveyances); scheme for loading and unloading of vehicles; and other possible issues that may occur later.

Engr. Balisi, the project engineer assured that there will be one barge for the vehicles and one ferry boat for the passengers that are free of charge.

Meanwhile, the Rescue 29 Group headed by its President Jenifer Junio-Baquiran is expected to schedule a training for residents of the said town who will assist during the actual operations to ensure the safety of commuting public and at the same time, forming the rescue team of Lallo.

Mayor Pascual guaranteed that with the proper coordination and cooperation of the barangay officials, PNP members, PMG,TMG, Rescue 29, Provincial Government of Cagayan, and the commuting public, there will be a smooth and synchronized traffic scheme implemented during the duration of the rehabilitation of the suspension bridge. I hope they have also prepared a good plan/strategy for the upcoming rainy season, when typhoons (subsequently the swelling of the Cagayan River) are most likely to visit the province during the upcoming months, and crossing that river (deep lagoon) would be very scary and potentially dangerous to all commuters as well as their vehicles and cargoes.
