The upcoming Aggao Nac Cagayan celebration, dubbed as “Fiesta Nam Magili” will feature new and unique activities that aim to add color and excitement to the weeklong festivities on June 23-29, 2012 at Cagayan Sports Complex, Tuguegarao City.

According to Edna T. Junio, PSWDO Officer and concurrently the Aggao Nac Cagayan 2012 Steering Committee Chair, as for the past years, this year’s celebration will focus on bringing the local government closer to the people.  “Governor Alvaro T. Antonio’s 10-K agenda will be highlighted in every activity. The Aggao Nac Cagayan will be a venue to serve the public to make them feel that the celebration is really a celebration among Cagayanos,” she added.

Among the new activities include the Takbo para sa Kalikasan, Cagayan Read-a-thon Competition, Kultura Cagayana Cultural Dance Competition, the Pretty Preggy Contest and Ginoong Cagayan.

As part of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office’s (PNREO) efforts to promote environmental preservation and conservation, a fun run dubbed as “Takbo para sa Kalikasan” will be scheduled on June 24, 2012 at 6:00 in the morning.

The event will feature various running distances for various ages. The contests will be 2K, 4K, 6K and 10K. According to Robert Adap, PENRO Officer, the activity aims to increase the level of awareness of the public on the importance of a healthy environment. “We expect about 300 participants to join this affair. This is exclusive of our Bin-I Ti Agtutubo (BTA) scholars and our SPES graduates who have signified their intent to join,” Adap added. Cash prizes will be given among the winners of the different categories.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Tourism Office and the Division of Tuguegarao City, Department of Education, will showcase Cagayan Read-a-thon Competition, Kultura Cagayana Cultural Dance Competition and Cagayan Quiz bee as the latest addition to Aggao Nac Cagayan festivities. According to Eugene Pauig of the Provincial Tourism Office, the activities are venues for students to revisit their past and learn about the culture, history and traditions of the Cagayanos through stories and dances.

The Cagayan Read-a-thon is a reading contest among grade four pupils in the province, which will involve story-telling, story interpretation through illustration, and reading comprehension. The Cagayan Quiz Bee will also be a contest among students.

“In Kultura Cagayana Dance Competition, there will be two different contested dances—Kilingkingan for secondary students and La Hota Cagayana (Enrile version) for tertiary students,” Pauig added.

On the other hand, a beauty pageant among pregnant women dubbed as “Pretty Preggy” will be one of the highlights of Aggao. This activity is part of the health promotion programs of the Provincial Health Office on safe pregnancy and motherhood. According to Dr. Marcos M. Mallillin, PHO Officer, this activity aims to reduce the problems on maternal health. “The search will be participated by pregnant mothers from the different municipalities who are on their 2nd trimester pregnancy (4th -6th month of pregnancy), who are not first time pregnant women. Exclusive breastfeeding among these mothers during their previous pregnancies is also a criterion,” he explained.

Another exciting activity the public will expect is the Ginoong Cagayan—a competition among Cagayano males ages 18-23. The competition aims to show Cagayano values, good health and grooming, and the physical astute, talents, creativity and intelligence of the Cagayanos. Maximilan B. Umoso, Executive Assistant II of the Office of the Governor, who is also the Director and Program Coordinator of Ginoong Cagayan said that this competition is a venue to develop the potentials of the youth. “The Ginoong Cagayan is also an opportunity to discover talents who will serve as role models for the young generation. Aside from this, the activity will also help boost the tourism industry in the province,” Umoso added.

The Aggao Nac Cagayan will officially start on June 23, 2012 with an opening program at the Cagayan Sports Complex. The event will run for a week, with a line-up of various activities. The official Aggao Nac Cagayan day is on June 29, 2012. It will be a special non-working holiday in the whole province, as declared by the Executive Order No. 2420 by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
