“Develop the young minds through chess inorder to get rid of vices,” said Edna T. Junio, Chair of the Aggao Steering Committee 2012 during the opening ceremony of the 5th Governor Alvaro T. Antonio Chess Tournament held at Paseo Reale Function Room last June 27, 2012.
Some 300 participants from the elementary, secondary and tertiary level joined the two-day chess tournament. They came from different public and private schools from 22 municipalities including Calayan Islands.
The Chess Tournament was spearheaded by Cagayan Chess Development Club through its Founder and President, Linart Agustin. The club produced chess stars like Jaypee Balubal, 12 year-old first year student of Gosi High School, who gave an honor to the province when he bagged awards in the recently held Palarong Pambansa 2012 in Pangasinan.
Balubal represented the province as the overall winner in chess during the CAVRAA meet. Among 17 contenders in the national level in the chess tournament, he garnered the 7th place which made Cagayan in the limelight. In an interview, Balubal said, he was only eight years old when he started playing chess. He added that playing chess is his passion.
