A three-day surgical mission was successfully implemented by the Provincial Government of Cagayan through the Provincial Health Office (PHO), the Terra Haute Indiana Kami (THINK)-UST Medical Alumni Association of America (USTMAAA), Agbiag Partylist through Cong. Patrick T. Antonio, and the City Government of Tuguegarao.

Some fifty-eight patients were given free major surgical operations at the People’s General Hospital, Tuguegarao City last January 22-24, 2013.

According to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Marcos M. Mallillin, aside from the free major surgical operations that were done, free post-operative medicines were also given to the patients who were operated on the said activity.

Mallillin also said that the surgical mission is aimed to provide free services to indigent Cagayanos who cannot afford to undergo major operations.

The cases handled were the following: goiter, myoma, palatoplasty, cheiloplasty, hemorrhoids, ovarian cyst, total hysterectomy, thyroid cyst, breast mass and inguinal hernia.

The THINK-USTMAAA is an organization composed of the pioneer medical alumni of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila who are now based in the US.

Surgeons and nurses from the PHO and East Avenue Medical Center were also tapped to perform major surgical operations during the activity.
